Calendula: what are the benefits for dry and sensitive skin?

Tightness, a feeling of discomfort, and dry patches that return with the cold: dry and sensitive skin requires simple, well-tolerated, and truly nourishing care. Calendula is among the most commonly used botanical ingredients for such skin. Here is why.

Belle Luce Calendula Care Oil

What is calendula?

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also known as pot marigold, is a flower with yellow-orange petals. It has long been used in cosmetics, primarily in the form of an oily macerate: dried flowers are infused for several weeks in a vegetable oil, which absorbs their fat-soluble compounds.

What does it contain?

Calendula flowers notably contain:

  • carotenoids, the pigments that give the macerate its golden color;
  • flavonoids, which are antioxidant compounds;
  • triterpenes, which are widely studied in calendula research.

What can you expect for your skin?

When combined with a vegetable oil or a balm, calendula nourishes dry skin and helps limit water loss. With regular application, skin appears more supple and comfortable, and the feeling of tightness is diminished.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the calendula oil and balm?

The oil is fluid and spreads easily over large areas, including the face. The balm is richer and more concentrated, making it ideal for targeting very dry areas.

Is calendula suitable for sensitive skin?

Calendula is a widely used ingredient in skincare for sensitive skin. As with any new product, if your skin is reactive, test it first on a small area, such as the inside of your elbow, and consult the product's INCI list.

Are Belle Luce calendula products highly rated on Yuka?

Yes. Both the Calendula Oil and Balm score 100/100 on Yuka.
